GIS Data Survey for Emergency Management
From 2003 through 2006, the Governor's Office of Homeland Security, MEMA, Maryland’s Department of Transportation, Towson University, and MSGIC worked together to firmly establish GIS as an indispensible technology tool for disaster management. Through a Department of Homeland Security Information Technology Evaluation Program grant (ITEP), the prototype Maryland Emergency Geographic Information Network (MEGIN) was developed.
The following historic information pertains to the data collection effort conducted by the MEGIN working group. Further funding to move MEGIN from prototype to production was not available. The data survey specific to MEGIN is closed, but the information remains on the MMRG Web site to provide the historical background for Maryland’s ongoing effort to coordinate Maryland’s valuable GIS resources.
This survey will identify databases that Maryland's homeland security and emergency response communities can access via MEGIN. Emergency managers will use the databases along with GIS tools that include EMMA©, the Emergency Management Mapping Application. EMMA© is a secure Web-based application that allows users to view information from various databases in the form of interactive maps. You can find more information about EMMA© here.
By answering the questions in this survey, you will be creating a searchable summary of the data's purpose, availability, and owner. Users will be able to access the information you provide in the survey, not your actual data.
Users who only want to search the survey are not required to request a login ID.
If your agency does not currently have GIS data but may have GIS data in the future, please obtain a login and submit a "person" entry so that we can contact you in the future with updates, potential GIS data, geographic applications, various projects, or information about other database issues.

If you have any questions about how to complete the survey, please contact gisdatasurvey@towson.edu.
