2006 Statewide GIS Coordination
A partnership between the Towson University Center for GIS and the Maryland State Geographic Information Committee (MSGIC) was awarded a federal grant to develop strategic and business plans for GIS coordination in Maryland. Maryland is one of eleven states to receive a Future Directions Fifty States Initiative award in 2006 to design coordinating mechanisms that will make best use of the state’s diverse GIS resources.
The grant is funded by the U.S. Geological Survey through the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) cooperative agreement program, whose mission is to help and encourage all levels of government, the private and non-profit sectors, and the academic community to share geospatial data.
The Fifty States Initiative grant affords the timely opportunity to define the framework of a specific plan that suits all of Maryland’s GIS stakeholders and also represents a significant cost-saving for the state.
